One of my earliest memories is my mom making a traditional Mexican beverage known as Agua Fresca or Aguas de Frutas, which translates as "fresh water" or "fruit waters.“ These light and refreshing fruit drinks are a great way to cool down during the heat of the summer!

Vitrolero or Vitroleros are the large plastic or glass containers of Aguas Frescas that can be found at many street stands or vendors all over Mexico, usually featuring seasonal fruits. The flavors will amaze you, and you may just find yourself hooked…

Agua Frescas are not usually served over ice because it dilutes the fruit flavors. We simply use cold water and chill the fruit, or chill the prepared Aqua Fresca in the refrigerator before serving. The mild yet exceptional fruitiness of the Agua Frescas pair well with the bold flavors of Mexican cuisine.
Popular variations include:
Agua de Fresa: Strawberries
Agua de Jamaica: Hibiscus Flower ( my personal favorite! )
Agua de Mango: Mango
Agua de Melón: Cantaloupe or any other melon.
Agua de Papaya: Papaya
Agua de Sandía: Watermelon
Agua de Tamarindo: Pods of the Tamarind tree
Agua Fresca de Pepino: Peeled & seeded cucumbers
*Lime juice can also be added for tartness to some aguas frescas.
There is a Mexican religious tradition called the Día de la Samaritana. According to the Gospel of John, this celebration recalls an encounter Jesus had with a good Samaritan woman. Jesus quenched his thirst during his journey by asking for freshly drawn water. Many throughout Mexico commemorate this encounter during Lent by setting up agua fresca stands and serving passersby’s for free.
